GEAR
I am often asked about what gear I use, so I have put together the following resource to show what I use on both a regular and irregular basis to create images and video.
If you have any further questions, feel free to drop me an email.
Cameras
For my primary camera system, I use Sony cameras, specifically the Sony A7Riii. I also have a Sony A7Riii that has undergone a Full Spectrum Conversion by Kolari Vision. This allows the camera to represent light from beyond the visible spectrum.
As well as Sony cameras, I also use the following cameras:
Fuji X100T for location scouting and point and shoot work
Olympus TG4 for underwater work
Mamiya RZ67 for medium format film work
Olympus OM1 for 35mm film work
Hasselblad Xpan II for 35mm film work
iPhone 13 Pro for candid work and social media
Fujifilm GFX 100S for specialist campaign work
DJI Mini 3 Pro for drone work
Lenses
Drew’s lens of choice is the Sony G Master 35mm f1.4 Lens
For Sony cameras:
Sony FE 35mm f1.4 G, Sony FE 85mm 1.4 G, Sigma 24mm-70mm f2.8 ART
He has also in the past used:
Sony FE 14mm-24mm f2.8
Sony FE 24mm f1.4
Sony FE 200mm-600mm f5.6-6.3
For other cameras:
Fuji X100T has a built in 35mm equivalent lens
Olympus TG4 has a built in 35mm equivalent lens
Mamiya 90mm f3.5
Mamiya 45mm f4
Olympus OM1 the 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f2.8
Fujifilm GF 32mm - 64mm f4
Fujifilm GF 45mm f2.8
Fujifilm GF 110mm f2
Hasellblad 45mm f4
Lights
I uses almost exclusively Profoto lights because of the build quality, the flash duration, and the customer service.
My kit comprises of the following:
Profoto B10
Profoto B10X
Profoto A2
I have also worked with:
Profoto D1
Profoto D2
Profoto B1
Modifiers
The bulk of Drew’s work is lit using the Profoto Medium Umbrella, with a white interior and a diffuser, and the Profoto OCF 3’ Octa, which clicks open.
Drew’s other modifiers are as follows:
Profoto XL White Umbrella with Diffuser
Profoto Zoom Reflector
Profoto Clic Snoot
Profoto Clic Barndoors
Cases
For his main camera bag, Drew switches between a Pelican 1535 AIR case, and a Thinktank AIRPORT INTERNATIONAL™ V3.0 case, as they both have wheels.
For his main cases, he uses Pelican 1615 AIR cases.
The majority of his gear is carted around on location using a RockNRoller Cart.
Backdrops
Drew primarily shoots on location, without the use of backdrops, but when he does use backdrops, he uses ‘Gravity Backdrops’ Medium Hand Painted Canvas Backdrops.
For his Texas portrait series he used an Extra Large Oliphant Hand Painted Canvas Backdrop.
Drew also, occasionally, uses Colorama 2.72x11m Paper Rolls in a variety of colours.
Computers, Devices & Software
Drew’s main computer work is done on his 2019 Macbook Pro 16” and Magic Keyboard + Mouse.
His software is as follows:
Adobe Lightroom Classic 2025
Adobe Photoshop 2025
Adobe Premiere Pro 2025
Adobe Bridge 2025
Adobe Media Encoder 2025
For Tethering, Drew uses exclusively Capture One 20, a Tethertools cable, and the iWorkCase v3.
On the go, I use an Apple iPhone 13 Pro, with the following Apps being used most regularly:
Lightroom Mobile
Darkroom
FILMM
For his more general business software, I use:
Xero
Dropbox
Google Suite
Tripod
Tripods are an anathema to me, however, when I am forced to use one, I use a Manfrotto 190XPRO Aluminium 4-Section Tripod. Or whatever is closest.
Data Storage
I use a 3-2-1 Backup System for his images, and currently is running at 38TB of images and video shot since 2008.
I primarily uses Lacie 2TB Rugged Portable Hard Drives.
Sandisk SD & SDHC Cards with write speeds of no less than 160mb/s
Synology 1522+ for my cold storage
And finally Dropbox for my cloud backup.
Stands
I uses C Stands for all of mu assignments, with the rare exception of using nano stands when space or time are at a premium. Do not put a £1700 light on a £10 stand.
Filters
I use a set of ND filters when flying at the DJI Mini 3 Pro, a set of KOLARI Full Spectrum Filters when using my Full Spectrum Camera, and a series of Step Up / Down Rings should filters sizing issues need to be addressed.
Bits & Bobs
The following is a list of ‘bits and bobs’ that come in handy on set. All these things have been born out of experience:
Sandbags
Electrical Tape
Oven Roasting Bags
Gaffa Tape
Pliers
Chairs
Extension Leads
Clips
Head Torch
Lens Cloths
Ear Plugs
