SHOT ON FILM
SHOT ON FILM is an ongoing project shot using the Hasselblad XPAN II – one of the only 35mm panoramic cameras ever made.
Originally developed in the late 1990s, the XPAN and XPAN II sit in a strange, almost mythical place in photographic history: technically ambitious, commercially (incredibly) niche, and now increasingly rare - for many, this is a ‘holy grail’ camera. The unique feature of the camera is that it shoots double width 35mm images: two frames combined into one long wide image.
Shooting film on a camera like this slows everything down and asks more of you – as you only get 20 frames per roll, every frame has to be considered, and every movement intentional. In a world built around speed and volume, this way of working that has helped me rediscover a quieter, more focused love for photography.
Taking this camera around the world feels like a genuine privilege. It’s not unusual for subjects to comment on it – to recognise it, to ask about it, or to share their own memories of film. That moment of connection often changes the energy in the room, grounding the shoot in something more considered and collaborative. Photographing remarkable people and places on film carries a sense of responsibility, but also gratitude – a chance to contribute, in a small way, to the long and enduring legacy of the medium itself.
