Professor Brian Cox

Professor Cox’s team kindly approached me to document his show Symphonic Horizons at the Royal Opera House in London. As well as the show itself, I was privileged to spend time backstage with the Professor as he went through his pre-show rituals, documenting his preparations for the performance.

Symphonic Horizons was an innovative concert series that brought music and science into dialogue, exploring humanity’s place within the cosmos. The production combined live orchestral performance with scientific commentary, using music as a framework through which audiences could reflect on the scale, mystery, and beauty of the universe.

Presented at London’s Royal Opera House from 30 July to 4 August 2024, the show featured physicist Professor Brian Cox alongside conductor Daniel Harding and the Britten Sinfonia. The programme wove together works by Mahler, Strauss, Sibelius, and Hans Zimmer with explorations of cosmology, time, and existence, creating a shared narrative between scientific ideas and emotional response.

Through spoken reflections and symphonic performance, Symphonic Horizons invited audiences to consider complex scientific concepts in an accessible and engaging way, demonstrating how music can deepen understanding and provoke curiosity about the universe and our place within it.
